October 25th Auction at Cowan's: Part 2

Tansel Powder Horn
12" length, carved "fish mouth" with raised ring. Engravings of hunter with drawn bow, deer, eagle with shield and banner with E. Pluribus Unum. Initials WRJ are engraved in the horn. Wood base with brass knob. Ca 1820-1830.
Condition: Still retains a nice untouched yellow to brown patina and most of the original paint. Horn has a crack from the base about 1.5" up the horn. Complete and original.









Cartridge Box

9" x 5" box converted to cartridge box with wood block. This box conforms to the 1775 specifications for a Minuteman's box.






Kentucky Rifle by H. Eckler

.45 caliber, 43.5" octagonal barrel, 1" across the flats. Double tang screw. Top of barrel engraved in script H. Eckler. H. Eckler worked in Schuylkill County, PA. Reading-style rifle. [See Kindig, Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age.] Engraved lockplate and hammer; roller on the frizzen spring. Four-piece engraved brass patchbox, engraved toeplate, engraved brass eagle on the cheek piece, brass sideplate, triggerguard, nosecap and ramrod ferules. Silver thumb rest, single pig-tail trigger. Heavy curly maple stock with nicely executed incised caving on the left side of the buttstock. Molding on the bottom of cheek piece, and on the bottom of stock from the toe to rear of triggerguard. Nice incised carving behind rear ramrod ferule and running parallel with ramrod channel to front ramrod ferrule.

Condition: Barrel and lock are dark brown with some light pitting around the touch hole and on the barrel and pan. A small piece of wood missing from burn out forward of the frizzen. Brass has dark untouched patina. Stock has dark brown to red untouched patina. Stock has nicks and dings. There is an untouched crack through the wrist. A great untouched original flintlock rifle left in the black.
